From Care Delivered to Care Co-Created: The Future of Patient-Centred Healthcare
Healthcare quality is no longer only about standards, accreditation, and clinical indicators. These remain essential, but the deeper question is whether care truly creates value for the person receiving it
The future of healthcare must move beyond doing to and doing for patients towards doing with patients excellently. This is where person-centered care and co-production become not just ideals, but practical strategies for safety, dignity, and better outcomes.
In resource-limited and geographically complex settings, low-value care is not merely a financial issue; it is a quality, safety, and equity issue. As the saying goes, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” — quality is proven not only by certificates, but by whether patients feel heard, families understand the plan, and care remains safe after discharge.
The next frontier of healthcare quality is clear: clinical excellence must be combined with humility, kindness, and partnership. The question is simple: are we still caring for patients merely for their sake, or are we truly ready to do so with them?
